Introducing the MGJ2/3/6 series of DC-DC converters suitable for 'high/low' side IGBT drive applications from Murata

Date Published : 01/11/2018 Share with:

The MGJ2, 3 and 6 series from Murata Power Solutions are 2, 3 and 6 Watt DC-DC converters featuring high isolation with a choice of dual (MGJ2) and configurable triple (MGJ3/6) outputs housed in compact form factors suitable for powering "high side" and "low side" gate drives in bridge circuits using insulated-gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs), Silicon Carbide and MOSFETs.

The MGJ2/3/6 series have an isolation test voltage of 5.2 kVDC, the MGJ2 series offers basic and supplementary insulation whereas the MGJ3/6 series offers reinforced insulation. All parts are designed to conform to the internationally recognized safety standard UL60950 (pending) and can provide a key element of the end-product's safety insulation system. The MGJ2 series also have recognition pending to medical safety standard UL60601 (3rd Ed) making them suitable for medical as well as industrial applications.

MGJ2 series

The MGJ2 dual output 2 Watt series are packaged in an industry-standard SIP format, they occupy a 1.96 cm squared footprint and achieve a power density of 0.81 Watts per cm cubed. The MGJ2 series has an ultra-low barrier capacitance of around 3pF. The series comprises 12 models offering nominal input voltages of 5, 12, 15 or 24 VDC. For each input voltage there are three output voltage combinations available: +15/-5 VDC, +15/-8.7 VDC or +20/-5 VDC. The converters have characterized dv/dt immunity, suiting reliable operation in fast switching applications. Partial discharge performance is also optimized to give a long service life.

MGJ3/6 series

The MGJ3/6 triple output 3 and 6 Watt DC-DC converters are supplied in compact open frame style formats. The devices are available in a choice of three input voltages of 5V (4.5-9V), 12V (9-18V), and 24V (18-36V) with each device featuring 3 configurable outputs of +15V/-5V, +20V/-5V and +15V/-10V making them suitable for use with a large proportion of IGBT, MOSFET and Silicon Carbide devices available in the market. Ultra-low barrier capacitance of just 15pF allows the MGJ3/6 series to minimize coupling of transients across the isolation barrier.

A choice of asymmetric output voltages allows optimum drive levels for best system efficiency and EMI. The MGJ3/6 series is characterised for high isolation and dv/dt requirements commonly seen in bridge circuits used in motor drives and inverters. A disable/frequency synchronisation pin, simplifies EMC filter design. The MGJ3/6 features include short circuit protection and overload protection.

The MGJ2/3/6 DC-DC converters are suitable for a wide range of applications including high power AC/DC conversion, welding, industrial machinery, medical imaging, motor drives and solar power inverters. The converters all have extended industrial grade temperature ratings, MGJ2 series has an operating temperature range of -40°C to +100°C and the MGJ3/6 series are rated -40°C to +105°C.
