The STMicroelectronics STWLC68 device is an integrated Wireless Power Receiver suitable for portable applications and capable of managing up to 5 W of output power. The chip has been designed to support Qi 1.2.4 specifications for inductive communication protocol and Base Power Profile (BPP).
The STWLC68 shows excellent efficiency performance thanks to its integrated low-loss synchronous rectifier and low drop-out linear regulator, both of these elements are dynamically managed by the 32-bit, 64 MHz ARM Cortex microcontroller core to minimize overall power dissipation over a wide range of output load conditions. The output voltage is programmable from 3.6V to 20V in 25mV resolution.
The user can access and modify different configuration parameters through the devices I2C interface, allowing them to tailor the operation of the device to the specific needs of the application. The configuration parameters can be saved in the embedded OTP memory and automatically retrieved at power-up, allowing the STWLC68 to operate as stand-alone device. In addition the device has an on-board 8-channel 10-bit A/D converter and 6 configurable general purpose I/Os. The device is also fault tolerant and features on-chip thermal management and protection for over-voltage & over-current, accurate voltage/current measurement for Foreign Object Detection (FOD) and output over-voltage clamping.
The STWLC68 is housed in a compact Chip-Scale Package measuring just 3.29 x 3.7 mm making it suitable for use in a wide range of applications including wearable devices, power banks, smartphones, portable dataloggers, tracking devices and medical and healthcare equipment.
Development support
To help designers STMicroelectronics have also made available two development board reference designs.
The STEVAL-ISB68WA is a reference design for wearable applications based on the STWLC68 wireless power receiver. The kit includes a receiver board with a small 15 mm diameter receiving coil and provides a constant output voltage with 2.5 W maximum output power. The board supports Foreign Object Detection (FOD) for safe operation and is ready for immediate use when placed on a suitable wireless power transmitter. An on-board LED indicates connection with the transmitter succeeds and enabled output voltage, and a programmable interrupt output is available to inform the host system in user applications. The complete application fits onto a 10x10 mm PCB area and the layout is designed to facilitate probing and user customization. A free STSW-ISB68GUI Graphic User Interface (GUI) is provided to monitor and configure the receiver on your PC using the USB-to-I²C dongle included in the kit.
The STEVAL-ISB68RX evaluation board with STWLC68 wireless power receiver implements a 5 watt Qi Baseline Power Profile (BPP) application according to Qi specifications 1.2.4. The board functions as a standalone power receiver and provides a fixed output voltage when placed on a suitable wireless power transmitter. The board also integrates a USB-to-I²C bridge, allowing the user to monitor and control the STWLC68 chip with the STSW-ISB68GUI Graphical User Interface (GUI). The converter may also be used to directly interface with the final application or with other boards based on the same STWLC68 chip. The STEVAL-ISB68RX includes several safety mechanisms providing overtemperature, overcurrent and overvoltage protection as well as Foreign Object Detection (FOD). A dedicated connector provides advanced access to STWLC68 chip functionality, including control signals, programmable GPIOs, and analog input for NTC temperature sensor.
