Anglia maps out course for academic future
As the first step in the relationship with Glamorgan, Anglia has donated one of its new Columbus STR71x development kits to the University’s Centre for Electronic Product Engineering (CEPE). The collaboration between Anglia and universities will take the form of a variety of support activities, aimed at ensuring that the next generation of electronics engineers will have easy access to the latest advances in component technology, development tools and technical resources. Explains John Bowman, Anglia’s Commercial Engineering Manager, “We see this initiative very much as a long term investment in the UK Electronics Industry – graduates from UK universities play a key role in this country’s reputation for design excellence. Similarly, Anglia’s Application Engineering team has an enviable reputation for design-led expertise and in-depth product and application knowledge, from which our customers currently benefit. Our support programme for University undergraduates and postgraduates is a natural progression of this, establishing links and working closely with tomorrow’s designers and specifiers.” Further developments in the relationship between Anglia and the University will include the adoption of the STR7 family for the University’s MSc course in Embedded Systems, and the use of other Anglia material for undergraduate courses. In preparation for the next academic year, Anglia is providing the School of Electronics with a substantial number of development boards, evaluation kits, product data and samples to support this teaching activity. The presentation by Anglia of the first Columbus kit took place this week at the Wales Millennium Centre on Cardiff Bay waterfront. Columbus is a complete development platform for the latest STR71xF family of ARM-core microcontrollers (MCUs) from STMicroelectronics, which are also distributed by Anglia. Comments Clive Thomas, Manager of CEPE, “ We’re increasingly finding our clients’ processing requirements call for 32-bit MCU specification, but their cost requirements still dictate 8-bit MCU pricing. We have chosen the STR7 family as the ideal solution because it offers an excellent balance between these two criteria. The Anglia Columbus kit provides the ideal springboard into STR7 projects - the family of STR7 MCUs is both highly integrated and incredibly powerful. With both USB and CAN variants available, it offers us the flexibility to cope with the diverse hardware and software requirements we are now seeing from many different clients.” Bowman continues, “CEPE enjoys an excellent reputation in this region, providing expert advice and product development services to a wide spectrum of clients, many of whom are also Anglia’s customers. We hope that, with our help, CEPE will soon be established as a regional ‘Centre of Excellence’ for the STR7 family of ARM7TDMI-cored MCUs. We are delighted to be providing the team here with a comprehensive package of tools, training and support.” |
