New 7V / 13.6V LDMOS family from ST operates at up to 2GHz

A new series of RF Power LDMOS products targeted for operation up to 2 GHz has been introduced by STMicroelectronics. Housed in various package types such as PowerSO-10RF, PowerFLAT™ and SOT-89, it offers a cost-effective solution for applications such as PMR, UHF RFID and Automatic Meter Readers (AMR).

PD8xxxx series

The introduction of the new lead-free PD8xxxx series represents a major step for ST in the RF market for 900MHz commercial and private radios. The PD8xxxx uses ST’s latest LDMOS technology which was specifically designed for 7V (portable) and 13.6V(mobile) applications. This new process reduces overall parasitic components allowing the PD8xxxx series to operate at frequencies up to 2GHz.

In particular, the Cross has been reduced by means of a narrower gate width (0.6μm vs 1.3μm) which with respect to the previous LDMOS technology, allows higher RF gain (+5 dB) and higher efficiency (+10 %).

Applications

  • VHF/UHF and 900 MHz mobile and portable radios
  • UHF RFID readers
  • Automatic meter readers
  • VHF/UHF and 900 MHz wireless alarm systems
  • EPIRB and sonar buoys
  • 1.6 GHz satellite mobile communications

Application support kit

In order to reduce design cycle time, ST provides useful application support kit which includes the following items:

  • Demo boards and/or Gerber files
  • Electrical schematics + BOM lists
  • S-parameters
  • Spice models

This kit allows customers to first perform an evaluation of the device and then to use the hardware/software design as a starting point for their own product development.
