Intersil launch USB protection devices that support the new USB 3.0 standard
Intersil has announced a family of USB circuit breakers that protect multiple ports and feature the industry's tightest current limit and shutdown tolerances, and support the new USB 3.0 standard as well as the entrenched USB 2.0 standard.
The latest dual channel ISL6185 devices provide robust protection for systems utilising USB connectivity, or for a wide variety of other 2.5V to 5.5V power rails. The ISL6185 provides independent over current protection fault protection for two independent power rails at up to 1.8A current trip levels.
The devices feature low standby current of only 1μA, and are available in wide variety of options including multiple OC trip levels, high or low enable, latch off or auto retry protection modes. They feature low Rdson P-channel pass elements to minimise voltage drop and power dissipation during heavy loads.
The ISL6185 devices are available in the industry standard 8 pin SO, as well as the 70% smaller DFN in both industrial and commercial temperature ranges.
Applications include servers, notebook and desktop PCs, embedded computing devices, or any other USB host. Well over 2 billion USB host ports are produced every year, providing a huge market opportunity.
The ISL6185 can also be used for non-USB electronic circuit breaker requirements for 2.5 to 5.5V power rails with loads up to 1.8A.

Shortly, ISL6186 will be released, which will protect a single rail at up to a 3.6A current limit.
