VARTA Microbattery improve pulse load capability of AA size Li-Thionyl Chloride cell
VARTA have improved the pulse load capability of the popular AA size Lithium Thionyl Chloride cell from 100mA up to 150mA, representing a 50% improvement for this important parameter.
With a nominal voltage of 3.6V and typical capacity of 2500mAh the cell can deliver a maximum continuous discharge current of 60mA, with a maximum pulse discharge current of 150mA, over a wide temperature range of -55C to +85C.
Lithium Thionyl Chloride’s long life and low self-discharge characteristic make it the battery technology of choice for applications with low drain, long service requirements in a broad range of applications including utility meters, ZigBee enabled sensors, emergency location beacons, GPS tracking, fire and security sensors and memory backup.
The improved pulse load performance now opens up new application areas where large pulse of energy are required for a short duration. Typically these applications are found in the wireless M2M market where GSM and other low power radio modules have become widely adopted and need a pulse of energy during the transmit cycle.
