STMicroelectronics specifies repetitive surge protectors for optimal design
STRVS repetitive voltage surge-protection devices come with all the information engineers need to optimise circuit protection and meet cost and energy-efficiency targets.
To help engineers protect against repetitive surges that heat up protection components and reduce their performance in power supplies of solar inverters, smart meters or mobile chargers, ST specifies the clamping voltage at high temperature and for peak current from zero to 2A. This saves engineers from deliberately over-sizing protection components. Data is also provided to help assess the effects of pc-board metallisation on temperature. Conventional Transient Voltage Suppression (TVS) diodes do not provide such information. Moreover, the STRVS clamping voltage is constant for any load, which enhances safety of the protected power components compared with RC (Resistor-Capacitor) snubber protection.
The STRVS series from STMicroelectronics provides effective MOSFET protection against multiple surges at frequencies from 50Hz to 200kHz, and is available now in SMB surface-mount packages.
