LED Driver with PWM dimming from STMicroelectronic provides maximum flexibility in cluster and signage designs
The ALED1642GW is an AEQC-100 qualified 16-channel LED driver for in-vehicle signage. Each of the current-regulated outputs can sink from 3 to 40 mA and is independently controlled through PWM dimming to provide a 16-bit grayscale palette. Thanks to its 20 V output ratings the device can drive several LEDs connected in a series. The on-chip auto power shut-down/wake-up capability minimizes power consumption while the programmable turn-on and turn-off time helps designers to meet stringent EMC constraints. The device comes in a thermally-enhanced 4.4X7.8 mm TSSOP24 package.
The ALED1642GW guarantees 20 V output driving capability allowing the user to connect several LEDs in series. In the output stage, sixteen regulated current sources provide from 3 mA to 40 mA constant current to drive the LEDs. The current is programmed through an external resistor and can be adjusted by 7-bit current gain register in two subranges. The brightness can be adjusted separately for each channel through a 12/16-bit grayscale control. A programmable turn-on and turn-off time (four different values are available) improves the system low noise generation performances.
In the ALED1642GW is available the open/short error detection mode. The auto power shutdown and auto power-on feature (this feature is selectable) allow the device to save power without any external intervention. Thermal management is equipped with overtemperature data alert and the output thermal shutdown (170°C). The high clock frequency is up to 30 MHz and it makes the device suitable for high data rate transmission. A selectable gradual output delay reduces the inrush current whereas the selectable SDO synchronization feature works when the device is used in daisy chain configuration. The supply voltage range is between 3 V and 5.5V.
ST's LED array drivers fully integrate all functions required to drive high-brightness LEDs. These devices allow constant-current control in a single-chip solution. The external parts are reduced to only one resistor that sets the preferred maximum current for all outputs. Devices also come with additional features such as high current, high precision, local and global LED brightness adjustment, thermal shutdown, error detection and auto power-saving functionalities.
ST offers a selection of multichannel constant-current LED drivers manufactured and qualified to meet and exceed automotive industry requirements. These LED array drivers are 20 V rated for best fit with automotive ratings. They are available with either 8 or 16 independent channels and provide tight channel-to-channel and IC-to-IC output current matching, ranging from 3 to 100 mA. They embed automatic power saving, error detection and thermal shutdown features. The ALED1642 features independent PWM dimming for maximum flexibility.
