Introducing SynJet cooler technology from Aavid Thermalloy, ideal for cooling LED Lighting fixtures

At low lumen levels LED solutions have been able to rely on a heat sink alone to remove heat. However, as higher lumen demands are required passive heat sinking can become too cumbersome to be a feasible solution. For LED thermal management, SynJet from Aavid Thermalloy is the only air moving solution that is reliable, quiet, flexible and lasts longer than the LED's it cools.

The Aavid Thermalloy SynJet LED Coolers allow designers to fit more lumens into less space as they cool more effectively, allowing two times the lumen output in the same size fixture or reducing the size of the LED's heat sink by up to two-thirds. The SynJet coolers are reliable and typically last longer than the product they cool with more than 100,000 hours of run time and no bearings or lubricants to wear out. Due to their high thermal efficiency airflow resulting in lower flow rates the SynJets are very quiet in operation and have adjustable settings allowing the user to customize to meet the application requirements. Through the development of very efficient actuators the SynJet coolers require very low power to operate, they can cool the same thermal load as a conventional fan with a fraction of the power needed. Additionally the SynJet coolers are extremely rugged, they are resistant to long term dust build-up and bumps and vibrations and can be used in applications as cold as -40°C to as hot as 85°C.

The basic principle of how a SynJet cooler works is described below.

SynJet Cooling Technology Basic Operation

1. An oscillating diaphragm creates pulses of high velocity turbulent air flow.
2. The high velocity flow "entrains" or pulls air in its wake increasing overall air flow by as much as 5 times.
3. The turbulent air flow improves the heat transfer out of the heat sink, while the entrained air sweeps the hot air out of the system, thus cooling more efficiently.

SynJet Thermal management solutions can be used to help solve a variety of common thermal challenges in LED Lighting:

Luminaire design is too large to fit aesthetic requirements
SynJets have demonstrated cooling solutions up to 1/3 the size of heatsinks alone resulting in smaller more elegant designs. In addition, SynJets allow you to hide heatsinks reducing the visual impact of the thermal management solution.

Retrofit solutions need to fit into a confined space
SynJet solutions can enable twice as many lumens in the same size or reduce the overall size by up to 1/3.

Luminaire requires high ambient temperature rating
As ambient temperature rises passive cooling performance is reduced making it difficult to maintain a low LED junction or case temperature. Adding SynJet air cooling can dramatically reduce temperatures even in high ambient conditions.

Confined spaces or closed boxes cause poor thermal performance
SynJets can circulate airflow in confined spaces with minimal ambient air exchange giving additional thermal performance.

Luminaire design is too heavy
SynJets can reduce the weight of passive thermal solutions up to 70% making mounting and installation easier as well as meeting code requirements for weight limits.

Luminaire orientation causes poor thermal performance
SynJets deliver the same thermal performance mounted in any direction allowing uplighting and other applications that require flexibility in light direction.
