The new SDC One-piece press fit PCB connector from Phoenix Contact.
Design engineers are under increasing pressure to fit more and more functionality into electronic devices and at the same time make them smaller and simpler to build. An impossible task you would think, but help is now at hand from Phoenix Contact when considering device connectivity with the introduction of the SDC press fit connector range.
Pitch and cable size are often fixed due to electrical requirements but location and assembly considerations have a new innovative solution. The new and innovative SDC 2.5 PCB connector from Phoenix Contact with SKEDD direct plug-in technology brings new choices to design engineers struggling with device connectivity.
With the relentless drive for devices to get smaller and have increased functionality, Phoenix Contact have identified a need for a new style of PCB connector which offers all the benefits of a traditional plug and header combination but without the restrictions placed on it by traditional production methods. The new SDC 2.5 from Phoenix Contact offers such a solution by merging press-fit headers with push-in spring conductor connection technology.
The SDC 2.5 uses SKEDD direct plug-in technology for a reliable contact to the PCB combined with conductor connections with push-in spring connection technology. Designed on a pitch of 5.00mm and with cable cross sections up to 2.5mm/sq the SDC is capable of carrying up to 12 amps and 320 volts making it a versatile solution for many applications. The SKEDD direct plug-in technology is extremely reliable (more so than soldering) and the contacts are qualified for PCB's with HAL (Hot Air Levelling) surface finishes. The SDC is available in 1 through to 16 pole versions and includes integrated test points, optional coding pins and cable release levers.

There are several advantages with the SDC with the most obvious being the one piece assembly. No header means one less component to fit during the automated assembly and the SDC can be pre-wired (if needed) ready for final assembly following the soldering process for other components on the PCB. As the connector does not go through the soldering process it can be located more conveniently without worrying about its impact on other components during soldering and visual inspection.
