Introducing the FH52 Series of Low Profile and Robust FFC/FPC Connectors from Hirose

Introducing the FH52 series from HIROSE, a family of Flat Flexible Cable/Flat Printed Circuit (FFC/FPC) connectors which meet the stringent requirements of automotive applications. Available in a choice of compact pitches, 0.5mm and 1mm, with a low profile height of just 2mm the range accepts 0.3mm FFC/FPC cables.

The FH52 series connectors feature a housing which incorporates a robust locking structure ensuring the actuator cannot be removed even under rough operating conditions. The rotating actuator is supported by the tips of the contacts to form a strong hinge point rather than relying on the walls of the housing. In addition, two metal fittings provide additional support to the actuator from underneath. As a result of these features, the connector can withstand a high pull force of 30N in the horizontal direction when using a ten-position tabbed FPC with a thickness of 0.3mm.

Secure actuator retention feature

The wide 110° opening of the actuator allows for easy insertion of the FPC/FFC cable into the connector whilst special cavities on each side of the connector, known as ‘side catchers’, are also provided to hold a tabbed FPC/FFC in place. These side catcher features retain the FPC/FFC cable temporarily, helping the assembly operator to guide it accurately into place. A firm and clear tactile click confirms that correct locking of the FPC/FFC has been achieved, ensuring the user makes a stable and reliable connection.

Side catcher feature to hold FPC/FFC in place prior to the lock being engaged

Two different types of PCB metal fittings are available, the L-shape type which extends from the edge of the housing to allow visual inspection of the soldering process from the top and also gives an enhanced PCB retention force of 90N. The I-shape metal fitting is lower in profile and does not extend to the side, saving board space and allowing the connectors to be mounted side-by-side, its retention force is approximately 50N.

Extended L-shape PCB metal fitting option

The FH52 series is supplied on tape and reel packaging and is compatible with automatic pick and place equipment making it suitable for high volume production. The connectors are constructed using LCP insulator material which meets the UL94V-0 flammability standard.
