Introducing the NFM series of SMD 3-Terminal Low ESL Capacitors from Murata, samples available from Anglia
The NFM series of 3-terminal low ESL capacitors from Murata are designed for use in circuits to suppress differential mode EMI noise on semiconductor power lines.
The NFM series of 3-terminal multilayer ceramic capacitors have lower ESL (Equivalent Series Resistance) than conventional 2 terminal multilayer ceramic capacitors, enabling them to reduce the impedance in a high frequency band with fewer components. Making use of this characteristic has resulted in their wide adoption for portable devices where compactness and high density are a key requirement. The use of 3-terminal multilayer ceramic capacitors has also increased due to the requirement for high performance processors and smaller electronics driven by demand for devices with greater functionality.
The 3-terminal construction of the NFM series allows for a shorter high frequency current path resulting in lower ESL and good noise suppression effect. The NFM 3-terminal capacitors have lower impedance to the ground terminal compared to normal 2-terminal capacitors, this attribute is the key to high-frequency noise suppression.

The NFM 3-terminal capacitors can be used in the power lines of the circuit, particularly power lines for high speed semiconductors. For example the power circuit for a processor uses decoupling capacitors to reduce impedance, thereby suppressing fluctuation of the power voltage and increasing stability. As the processing speed (operating frequency) of the processor increases, control of impedance in a wide frequency band is needed.
Another benefit due to the much lower ESL of the NFM 3-terminal capacitors is it allows for a significant reduction in component count whist still maintaining the same functionality, the reduced component count also increases reliability, reduces board space and placement cost.
The NFM series of 3-terminal low ESL capacitors are suited to a wide variety of applications including audio, video, instrumentation & measurement, medical devices, internet of things (IoT), communications and other hand held portable devices.
