Introducing Omron MEMS-based Barometric Sensors for battery operated devices, samples available from Anglia

The 2SMPB series of MEMS-based barometric pressure sensors from Omron Electronic Components Europe have been designed to support height and pressure measurement in drones, smartphones, pedometers and other battery powered mobile devices. The Omron 2SMPB-02B and 2SMPB-02E sensors provide stable and reliable height and pressure measurements, allowing changes in elevation of as little as 2m to be reliably recorded.

Developed as an evolution of the Omron’s successful blood pressure gauge, the 2SMPB series sensors have been optimised for portable battery powered applications where power consumption and cost are important considerations. Utilising Omron piezo-resistive MEMS technology and production process know-how the devices are extremely compact and are housed in a LGA 9 pin package measuring just 2.0 x 2.5 x 0.85mm in size.

The sensors are constructed on a ceramic substrate with a metal lid making them much more tolerant to stress which occurs during the production assembly process.

2SMPB Series Construction

The 2SMPB series barometric sensors measure pressure with high accuracy based on the built-in low noise 24bit ADC and feature digital control and output via I2C / SPI interfaces.  The sensors automatically power down non-working circuits to minimise the power consumption. Individual calibration parameters are stored in the on-board One Time Programmable-ROM (OTP), and are retained when the system is powered down. An integrated temperature compensation circuit helps ensure accurate absolute pressure measurements.

The 2SMPB series sensors are configured to measure the pressure of air between 30kPa and 110kPa.  Maximum pressure is 800kPa and the sensors can be used at temperatures of -40°C up to +85°C without condensation or icing. The sensors use an industry standard a pin layout allowing replacement of alternative solutions on the market, simplifying upgrade and integration. There are 2 devices available, 2SMPB-02E and 2SMPB-02B, the 2SMPB-02E matches the features and performance of the 2SMPB-02B but offers an improved level of accuracy down to +/-50Pa. The -02B version is +/-100Pa.

The 2SMPB series of barometric pressure sensors are suitable for an extensive range of applications including wearables, smart phones, weather stations, drones, altitude meters, navigation & tracking devices, security, activity monitors, floor level detection for lifts & elevators, healthcare devices, instrumentation and many other portable battery powered devices.
