STMicroelectronics Synchronous Step-Down Switching Regulator Features Low Power Consumption & Noise, Samples and Evaluation Boards Available From Anglia
The L6986H from STMicroelectronics is a step-down monolithic switching regulator able to deliver up to 2A DC and is available in fixed 3.3V or 5V output or as an adjustable version with output voltage ranging from 0.85 V to VIN. The wide input voltage range of the adjustable version enables the device to meet the requirements for 5V, 12V and 24V power supplies. An integrated P-channel MOSFET high-side power element allows the devices to run at 100% duty cycle operation.
The L6986H switching regulator features a “low consumption mode” (LCM) which has been designed for applications active during idle mode, therefore maximizing the efficiency at light-load with controlled output voltage ripple. The device can operate in a low consumption mode (LCM) with a quiescent current down to 30 µA at VIN = 12 V and VOUT = 3.3V, hence assuring high efficiency at light loads.
Furthermore the L6986H devices “low noise mode” (LNM) makes the switching frequency constant and minimizes the output voltage ripple overload current range allowing it to meet low noise application specifications.
The device has an on-board output voltage supervisor which manages the reset phase for any digital load such as a MCU or FPGA whilst the RST open collector output can also implement output voltage sequencing during the power-up phase. The device also features synchronous rectification, designed for high efficiency at medium and heavy loads, the high switching frequency capability of the device (programmable up to 2MHz) allows designers to keep the size of the application compact whilst helping to reduce the cost of the required power passive components. In addition the pulse by pulse current sensing on both power elements implements an effective constant current protection.
The L6986H synchronous step-down switching regulator is supported by the STEVAL-ISA206V1 product evaluation board. The board featuring the L6986H adjustable switching regulator can deliver up to 2A and withstand cold cranking across 100% duty cycle, which, along with its wide input operating voltage range make the L6986H the ideal choice for 12V - 24V industrial standard Bus systems.
The default configuration of the evaluation board is output voltage set to 3.3V configured in LCM, 500 kHz switching frequency, ISKIP current set to high level and the switchover feature disabled. All of these configurations can be easily changed by the design engineer to evaluate different application scenarios.
The L6986H step-down monolithic switching regulators are ideal for use in 5V, 12V and 24V buses, Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), POL power nodes and Industrial Sensor applications where low noise and low power consumption are critical.
