NICHICON release small Li-ion rechargeable batteries for wearables and IoT devices, samples available from Anglia

NICHICON CORPORATION has launched the SLB series of Small Li-Ion rechargeable Batteries that have been designed to meet the growing demand from the latest portable devices such as wearables and IoT devices safely and reliably.

The SLB series uses Lithium titanate (LTO) for the negative electrode of the batteries, this gives the batteries high energy density, excellent rapid charge/discharge characteristics, good cold temperature performance, long life and also makes them very safe. Safety is extremely important when working with Li-Ion batteries, especially so when these batteries are used in devices which will be worn on a person’s body. The SLB series Li-Ion batteries have very low risk of fire or explosion, during safety testing performed by NICHICON the batteries were exposed to a number of extreme fault conditions including crushing, piercing, external short circuit, over charging and discharging, during these tests the batteries exhibited no explosion or ignition.

Click below for a presentation outlining the key features of the SLB series

The SLB series are available in mass production now for the 0.35mAh/2.4V part, housed in a compact cylindrical package with radial terminations the battery measures just 3mm diameter and 7mm height, it is capable of a maximum discharge and charge current of 7mA (20C) and has an energy density of 17Wh/L. NICHICON are also developing 14mAh and 150mAh capacity versions of the batteries.

The SLB batteries offer a good balance of power and energy density, this gives customers another option where existing battery and supercapacitor technologies can only offer one or the other not both.

The batteries have long life capability and can maintain at least 80% of their original capacity after 25K charging/discharge cycles, this is significantly better than a standard Li-Ion battery which typically offers around 1K charge/discharge cycles. Furthermore the batteries have excellent cold temperature performance and maintain 50% of capacity at -30°C, the batteries full operating temperature range is -30°C to +60°C.

The SLB series batteries allow high charge and discharge rates up to 20C, this allows users to rapidly charge the batteries up to 80% of capacity within 3 minutes, and rapidly discharge the batteries within 3 minutes as well.

The SLB series of Li-Ion batteries are suitable for a broad range of applications including wearables, hearables, IoT devices, eCigarettes, electric tools, smart meters, auxiliary backup power, sensor nodes, energy harvesting devices and other consumer and industrial devices.
