Extremely small TVS diodes from TDK offer highly effective ESD protection, samples available from Anglia

TDK Corporation have released a range of tiny high-power TVS diodes for ESD protection, extending its portfolio of components for bidirectional overvoltage protection of I/O interfaces. The PCB space requirement of the so-called chip scale package (CSP) is just 0.40 x 0.20 mm (CSP01005) or 0.60 x 0.30 mm (CSP0201), whilst the devices also feature an extremely low profile with a package height of just 0.10mm and 0.15mm respectively.

The CSP01005 (B74111G/U) and CSP0201 (B74121G/U) series of TVS diodes are designed for operating voltages from 2.8 V to 20 V (max. DC), with clamping voltages from 3.8 V to 27 V at peak pulse current of 8 A or from 5.0 V to 32 V at a peak pulse current of 16 A. The TVS diodes are available in 2 variants, GP series (B74111G & B74121G) for general purpose applications and the ULC series (B74111U & B74121U) for high-speed interface applications such as USB, HDMI, DisplayPort and Thunderbolt.

The recent TVS diode portfolio expansion now extends the capability to protect USB Type-C connectors and offers ideal solutions for high-speed data pins up to 40 Gbps using the fast USB4 40G protocol as well as the Thunderbolt protocol and supports fast charging of devices via power delivery protocol.

The TVS diodes have low parasitic capacitances from 0.18 pF to 0.65 pf for the high-speed interface series and 4 pf to 12 pF for the general purpose series, other features include short response time and low leakage currents as low as 1 nA at 3.3 V depending on the part chosen.

The TVS diode protective components are designed in accordance with IEC 61000-4-2 for an ESD contact discharge of up to 24 kV, exceeding standard requirements. They can withstand a high surge current load of up to 8 A according to IEC 61000-4-5 (8/20 µs), despite their miniature size.

Key Features

  • Bidirectional protection of I/O interfaces
  • ESD protection to IEC 61000-4-2
  • Maximum contact discharge voltage of up to 24 kV
  • Surge current loads of up to 8 A according to IEC 61000-4-5 (8/20 µs)
  • Low clamping voltage down to 3.8 V (ITLP = 8 A)
  • Low leakage current as low as 1 nA (VRWM = 3.3 V)
  • Very low capacitance down to 0.18 pF
  • Minimal space requirements of 0.40 x 0.20 mm or 0.60 x 0.30 mm in chip scale package
  • Extremely low package height down to just 0.10 mm

The TDK CSP01005 and CSP0201 series of TVS diodes are suitable for various IoT, smart home, and Industry 4.0 applications and due to their minimal dimensions, the new protective components are ideal for wearables, portable devices, cellular and network communication devices, instrumentation, notebooks, tablets, smartwatches and hearables.
